TLDR Graying hair is caused by changes in gene expression affecting cell functions.
The study analyzed gene expression changes in hair bulbs from Korean males in their 20s-30s to understand the molecular causes of graying hair. Using DNA microarray analysis, researchers identified 67 genes with significant expression changes in graying hair bulbs compared to black hair bulbs, with 30 genes up-regulated and 37 down-regulated. These genes were linked to processes such as melanogenesis, cell-cell interaction, calcium regulation, cytokine activity, keratin, and serine protease inhibition. The findings suggested that graying is influenced by alterations in gene expression patterns affecting various cellular functions.
