TLDR Black hairs have more pigment-related genes, while gray hairs have more keratin-related genes.
The study identified differential gene expression between gray and black hairs using advanced molecular biological tools. In black hairs, genes related to pigment production, such as Pmel17, MART-1, and tyrosinase, were more abundantly expressed. Additionally, the selenium-binding protein (hSBP) gene and the spast gene for spastin protein showed higher expression in black hairs. Conversely, gray hairs exhibited higher expression of genes associated with keratin, trichohyalin, and transmembrane glycoproteins, with ch 17, hRPK.142_H_19 showing particularly high signal intensity.
