TLDR Mice with the ab gene have abnormal sebaceous gland development, affecting sebum production.
In the study of mice homozygous for the ab gene, it was found that despite having actively secreting sebaceous glands, these mice exhibited abnormal sebaceous cytodifferentiation starting at 20 days post-conception. This abnormality persisted throughout their lives, characterized by atypical differentiation of outer root sheath cells and defects in the smooth membrane system and mitochondria, leading to fewer lipid droplets and distorted endoplasmic reticulum. While the Meibomian glands were similarly affected, the anal and preputial glands showed more normal differentiation. The abnormalities in asebic sebaceous glands were attributed to defective regulation of processes necessary for normal sebum production, potentially linked to an abnormal dermis or endocrine system.
