Extraction of Gallic Acid and Ferulic Acid for Application in Hair Supplements

Pedro Velho, Catarina S. Rebelo, Eugénia A. Macedo
TLDR Gallic acid and ferulic acid can be sustainably extracted for hair supplements with high efficiency and stability.
The study successfully extracted gallic acid (GA) and ferulic acid (FA) using Aqueous Two-Phase Systems (ATPS) composed of ethyl lactate, trisodium citrate, or tripotassium citrate, and water, at 298.15 K and 0.1 MPa. FA showed higher partition coefficients and extraction efficiencies (close to 100%) compared to GA. The stability of GA and FA was assessed at different pH levels, revealing that GA's UV-Vis absorbance spectra were unstable at high pH, while FA remained stable. The research supports the eco-friendly production of antioxidant-rich hair supplements from biowaste, with FA showing more favorable extraction characteristics.
