TLDR Higher Galectin-3 levels are linked to insulin resistance and may predict androgenetic alopecia severity.
This study investigated the relationship between serum Galectin-3 levels and insulin resistance in patients with androgenetic alopecia (AGA). Conducted on 60 AGA patients and 20 healthy controls, the research found that higher levels of Galectin-3 and HOMA-IR were independent predictors of AGA development and severity in both males and females. The study used enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to measure serum levels, with Galectin-3 showing an AUC of 0.978 and HOMA-IR an AUC of 0.967, both with 93.3% sensitivity and specificity at their respective cut-off values. These findings suggested that Galectin-3 could be a potential therapeutic target for restoring insulin sensitivity in AGA patients.
