TLDR Lower serum irisin levels are linked to androgenetic alopecia but not to insulin resistance.
This study evaluated serum irisin levels in 65 patients with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) compared to 64 healthy controls, finding that AGA patients had significantly lower serum irisin levels. A serum irisin level of ≤10.5 ng/mL could perfectly distinguish between AGA patients and controls with 100% sensitivity and specificity. However, no significant correlation was found between serum irisin levels and insulin resistance markers such as BMI, fasting insulin, or HOMA-IR. These findings suggest that while serum irisin is lower in AGA patients, it does not correlate with insulin resistance, indicating its potential role in the pathogenesis of AGA rather than in metabolic syndrome.
