TLDR Males with male pattern baldness have higher blood galectin-3 levels.
The study "Evaluation of Galectin-3 level in Male Androgenetic Alopecia Patients" involved 60 males with androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and 26 healthy controls. The researchers found that the median serum galectin-3 level was significantly higher in AGA patients (20.38 ng/ml) compared to the controls (8.63 ng/ml). This difference was significant (P <0.001), and there was a positive correlation between serum galectin-3 and the progression of the disease (r = 0.438, P 0.001). These findings were consistent regardless of age or body mass index. Therefore, the study concluded that males with AGA have elevated blood galectin-3 levels.
