TLDR Female pattern hair loss in Western India is common and often linked to metabolic syndrome.
This study of 90 women from Western India found that female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is common and often linked with metabolic syndrome (MetS). The mean age was 34.7 years, with 38.8% overweight and 12.2% obese. Hyperandrogenism signs were present in 83.3% of patients. Advanced FPHL was seen in 91.1%, and 34.4% had MetS, which correlated with earlier onset and greater severity of FPHL. Central obesity was significantly associated with FPHL severity, suggesting the need for early diagnosis and management.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
