TLDR Female pattern hair loss is more common among Indian women than previously believed.
The study conducted at a referral center in South India involved 100 women with female pattern hair loss (FPHL) and found that FPHL accounted for 15.3% of diffuse hair loss cases. The average age of participants was 31.26 years, with onset typically around 28.03 years. A family history of FPHL was present in 51% of cases, but it did not affect the age of onset or severity. The most common hair loss pattern was diffuse loss over the vertex (72%). The study identified overweight and obesity as significant risk factors, with 65% of participants having a BMI over 25. Other conditions like polycystic ovarian syndrome and hypothyroidism were noted in 23% and 15% of patients, respectively. The study concluded that FPHL was more prevalent than previously thought among Indian women.
