TLDR Women with female pattern hair loss may have a higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome.
A study from 11 years ago found that premenopausal women with female pattern hair loss (FPHL) have a higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MS) compared to healthy controls. Patients with FPHL had a significantly higher waist circumference, fasting insulin, fasting blood glucose, and lower HDL cholesterol compared to controls. The study suggests that FPHL may be associated with an increased risk of developing MS and recommends screening and treating patients for underlying clinical and metabolic abnormalities.
