TLDR Hair loss in androgenic alopecia may be linked to increased local androgen activities, but not to estrogen levels.
The study "The Expressions of Androgen Receptors and Estrogen Receptors in Bald and Non-bald Area of Androgenic Alopecia" conducted 21 years ago, aimed to evaluate the difference in the expressions of androgen receptors (AR) and estrogen receptors (ER) in bald and non-bald areas. The study involved 6 cases of androgenic alopecia and used immunohistochemical analysis on biopsy specimens from both areas. The results showed that androgen receptors were at a higher level in the bald area, while estrogen receptors showed no difference between the bald and non-bald areas. The study concluded that locally increased androgen activities may be related to hair loss in androgenic alopecia, and estrogens have less relationship in the pathogenesis of androgenic alopecia.
