TLDR Melatonin reduces BMP2 gene expression in goat hair follicles during the resting period.
The study investigated the effects of melatonin (MT) on the expression of the BMP2 gene in the hair follicles of Inner Mongolia Cashmere Goats. Eight female goats were divided into four groups, with three groups receiving MT implants and one serving as a control. Over a year, BMP2 gene expression was measured using real-time quantitative PCR. Results indicated that BMP2 expression increased slowly during both the prosperous and resting periods of hair follicle development, with higher expression in the resting period. MT implantation reduced BMP2 expression during the resting period, but there was no significant difference in expression throughout the entire growth period. The study suggested that BMP2 might play a role in regulating hair follicle growth and development in these goats.

Topical melatonin may help reduce hair loss and increase hair thickness in people with androgenetic alopecia (AGA), with some studies showing positive results. It can be mixed with minoxidil for application, and its effectiveness might be enhanced when used with micro-needling, but results may vary among individuals.
