TLDR Melatonin shortens the hair growth cycle by increasing PDGFA gene expression.
The study investigated the effect of melatonin on PDGFA gene expression in the skin hair follicles of Inner Mongolia Cashmere goats. Eight mature female goats were divided into a control group and three groups receiving melatonin implants. The results showed that melatonin influenced the hair growth cycle by altering PDGFA gene expression. In the control group, PDGFA expression was lowest in November and increased during the catagen phase in December, remaining high through telogen from January to April. Melatonin implantation led to a significant increase in PDGFA expression in January, with variations observed in different groups over two years. The study concluded that PDGFA gene expression was low during the hair growth phase and high during catagen and telogen, with melatonin shortening the hair growth cycle and influencing the transition between these phases.

Topical melatonin may help reduce hair loss and increase hair thickness in people with androgenetic alopecia (AGA), with some studies showing positive results. It can be mixed with minoxidil for application, and its effectiveness might be enhanced when used with micro-needling, but results may vary among individuals.
