TLDR Acne in reproductive-age women may be linked to conditions like PCOS and lifestyle factors, so doctors should check for these when treating acne.
The study, conducted on 1043 reproductive-age women in Sichuan province, China, found a 32.5% prevalence of acne, particularly high in the 19–24-year-old age group at 9.6%. It revealed that acne in these women could be associated with gynecological/endocrinological conditions, as 17.4% of the women with acne were diagnosed with PCOS and 18.3% with hyperandrogenism. Lifestyle factors such as high dessert consumption and low exercise frequency were also linked to acne occurrence. The study suggests that clinicians should assess for PCOS and hyperandrogenism in addition to considering acne as an isolated condition when treating reproductive-age women presenting with acne.
