TLDR Acne severity in women with PCOS is linked to younger age, lower body weight, and more body hair, but not to hormone levels.
The study evaluated the relationship between acne severity, as measured by the Global Acne Grading System (GAGS), and various clinical and laboratory markers of androgen excess in 133 patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It found that higher GAGS scores were significantly associated with younger age, lower BMI, and higher hirsutism scores, but not with androgen hormone levels or other measured parameters. Alopecia was associated with an increased waist/hip ratio but not with acne severity or androgen levels. The study suggests that GAGS may be useful for assessing acne in obese or hirsute PCOS patients and highlights the need for further research to understand the clinical significance of acne lesions in PCOS.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

RU58841, a potential hair loss treatment, was not commercialized due to marketability issues and lack of long-term safety data. Concerns about its formulation and delivery methods further complicate its use.

      in Finasteride/Dutasteride  60 upvotes 1 year ago
The conversation discusses whether it's better to start hair loss treatment with finasteride or dutasteride. Opinions vary, but many suggest starting with finasteride due to its shorter half-life and easier management of side effects, while others argue dutasteride is more effective and has fewer side effects.

community How come topical finasteride even works at all?

      in Finasteride/Dutasteride  31 upvotes 4 months ago
Topical finasteride can effectively reduce scalp DHT by targeting local enzymes, despite less systemic impact compared to oral forms. Combining oral dutasteride with topical finasteride and minoxidil may enhance hair loss prevention, though evidence of its effectiveness is limited.

Dutasteride has been used for 20 years with some hair thickness improvement but no dramatic regrowth. The user also experimented with minoxidil, tretinoin, and peptides like BPC 157 for potential benefits in hair density and quality.
