TLDR Women with PCOS have a higher risk of severe COVID-19 due to related health issues.
The review evaluated the relationship between SARS-CoV-2 infection and the metabolic and endocrine characteristics in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It was found that women with PCOS were at a 28%-50% higher risk of contracting COVID-19 and experienced increased rates of hospitalization, morbidity, and mortality. This was attributed to common comorbidities in PCOS such as dyslipidemia, obesity, diabetes mellitus, and arterial hypertension. The review summarized mechanisms contributing to the higher risk, focusing on abnormal carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, hyperandrogenism, and central obesity in women with PCOS.
