Determination of Estradiol and Progesterone Concentrations in Human Scalp Hair

TLDR Hair levels of estradiol and progesterone are higher in premenopausal than postmenopausal women, but the difference isn't statistically significant, indicating the need for a better measurement method.
The study aimed to measure estradiol (E) and progesterone (P) concentrations in the scalp hair of premenopausal and postmenopausal women using a chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay. It included 22 premenopausal women (mean age 30±4.8 years) and 17 postmenopausal women (mean age 62±8.1 years). Results showed higher mean E and P concentrations in premenopausal women compared to postmenopausal women, but the differences were not statistically significant. The study concluded that while hair E and P concentrations can be quantified by immunoassay, it may not be the optimal method, and further research is needed to find the best technique for measuring these hormones in scalp hair.
