TLDR Erdr1 could be a new marker for diagnosing hair loss.
The study from 2017 examined the potential of Erythroid Differentiation Regulator 1 (Erdr1) as a biomarker for hair loss disorders by analyzing skin samples from 21 patients with various forms of alopecia and 5 healthy controls. It found that Erdr1 expression was significantly lower in the epidermis and hair follicles of patients with hair loss disorders, especially in those with alopecia areata (AA) and scarring alopecia, with a more pronounced decrease in neutrophilic scarring alopecia. The study also noted that lower Erdr1 expression was associated with a poor response to treatment in AA, but there was no significant correlation with the severity of AA or with serum hemoglobin or ferritin levels. While the findings suggest that Erdr1 downregulation may be involved in the pathogenesis of hair loss and could serve as a diagnostic marker, the small sample size indicates that further research with larger samples is necessary to confirm these results.
