TLDR Certain genetic variations in IL18 may increase the risk of alopecia areata in Koreans.
The study investigated the association between interleukin 18 (IL-18) polymorphisms and alopecia areata (AA) in a Korean population, involving 200 AA patients and 200 healthy controls. It found that certain IL-18 gene variants, specifically the G allele of rs187238 and the A allele of rs549908, were significantly more frequent in the AA group, suggesting a genetic predisposition to AA linked to IL-18 polymorphisms. This indicated that IL-18 could play a role in the pathogenesis of alopecia areata, providing a potential target for future therapeutic strategies.
