TLDR The role of certain genes in skin cell development may be linked to psoriasis, but the connection is unclear.
This review explores the potential role of the epidermal differentiation complex (EDC) in the pathogenesis of psoriasis. The EDC is a gene cluster on chromosome 1q21 that is crucial for the development of epithelial tissues and the properties of the stratum corneum. Psoriasis is characterized by abnormal terminal differentiation of keratinocytes, but the exact relationship between EDC and psoriasis remains unclear. The review summarizes current knowledge on the physiological functions of EDC and discusses how it might contribute to psoriasis, highlighting the need for further research to clarify this relationship.
