TLDR Using micro skin tissue columns improves skin wound healing and reduces scarring.
The study, conducted on January 18, 2021, found that autologous micro skin tissue columns (MSTCs) significantly improved the healing of full-thickness skin wounds. Using a porcine model, the research involved 12 MSTC-treated wounds and 11 control wounds from 4 different animals. MSTC treatment was shown to accelerate re-epithelialization, increase collagen deposition, and reduce wound contraction and inflammation, leading to a more organized and less scar-prone healing process. The MSTCs, which contain all cellular and extracellular components of natural dermis, were found to be more effective than treatments that do not supply new cells directly to the wound. The study concluded that MSTCs could offer many benefits of autologous skin grafting without the associated donor site morbidity, suggesting their potential as a valuable addition to wound care. Future clinical studies are needed to explore the long-term effects of MSTC treatment on skin structure and function.
