TLDR New treatments for progressive hair loss in aging men are being developed, including targeted medical therapies, light therapy, plasma injections, and robotic hair transplantation.
The 2015 review "Emerging Therapies for Androgenetic Alopecia" discussed the development of new treatments for androgenetic alopecia, a condition causing progressive hair loss in aging men. The condition affected over 40% of Caucasian men by the age of 40. At the time, only two FDA approved medications were available to treat the condition. The review highlighted emerging treatments including medical therapies targeting prostaglandins, low level light therapy, platelet rich plasma injections, and robotic hair transplantation. These were being adopted to combat progressive hair loss due to the unmet need for more effective treatments.

Key treatments for hair preservation include minoxidil, finasteride/dutasteride, and microneedling, with additional options like specific shampoos, oils, biotin, zinc, tretinoin, clascoterone, and low-level laser therapy. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, reducing stress, and addressing nutrient deficiencies can also support hair health.

Quitting vaping significantly reduced hair loss for a user who was a heavy vaper and also taking finasteride. Some participants suggest nicotine's vasoconstrictive properties may worsen hair loss, while others share personal anecdotes of hair improvement after quitting smoking or vaping.
