TLDR As Japanese males age, their hair darkens due to increased melanin, with males generally having darker hair than females.
The study examined the effects of aging on hair color, melanosomes, and melanin composition in 44 Japanese males, focusing on sex differences. Results indicated that male hair darkens with age due to increased melanin and changes in melanosome morphology, similar to females. However, male hair was generally darker than female hair, especially in younger age groups. The study found significant correlations between hair color parameters and melanin composition, particularly with eumelanin components. Additionally, male melanosomes were larger, possibly due to slower hair growth rates. These findings highlight the role of melanin and melanosome changes in age-related hair color variation and underscore notable sex differences in these parameters.
