TLDR Atopic dermatitis in kids with alopecia areata can predict poor response to topical immunotherapy.
This study analyzed the effect of comorbid atopic dermatitis on the response to topical immunotherapy in 139 pediatric patients with alopecia areata. The mean age was 10.29 years, with 48.20% female and 51.80% male. Of these, 82.73% had severe disease, and 17.26% had mild disease. Atopic dermatitis was present in 38 patients. Overall, 56.83% of patients responded adequately to topical immunotherapy, while 43.17% had an inadequate response. The presence of atopic dermatitis was significantly higher in patients with an inadequate response, suggesting that screening for atopic dermatitis can help predict treatment outcomes in pediatric alopecia areata patients.
