TLDR Brazilian keratin treatment can cause severe skin reactions.
The study analyzed skin reactions in 7 patients following Brazilian keratin treatment (BKT), which used formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers. Patients developed severe erythema and scurf on the scalp, with eczema-like psoriasiform lesions, and some also had pustules on the face, neck, upper arms, and trunk. Dermatoscopic findings showed erythema and scurf, with scalp biopsies revealing psoriasiform and spongiotic patterns. The reactions suggested a drug reaction phenomenon rather than just irritant or allergic eczemas, highlighting potential concerns about formaldehyde absorption in hairdressers and clients.
