TLDR Brazilian keratin treatments can straighten hair but may contain harmful formaldehyde.

Brazilian keratin treatments were popular for straightening hair and claimed to make curly hair more manageable, frizz-free, and shiny. Despite their widespread use and the lack of reported adverse side effects, many of these products contained formaldehyde or its derivatives, raising safety concerns.
