TLDR Brazilian Keratin Treatment can cause skin reactions like redness and scaling, possibly due to formaldehyde.
This study examined psoriasiform skin reactions in 43 patients following Brazilian Keratin Treatment (BKT), with 81% experiencing symptoms like erythema and scales on the scalp. Symptoms typically appeared 12 months post-treatment, but some occurred within 30 days, potentially due to accumulated formaldehyde toxicity. Dermatoscopic findings included distinctive perifollicular scales and peripilar desquamation. The study suggests these reactions may be underdiagnosed and calls for further research on formaldehyde and cytokines like TNF-α. Limitations include the absence of patch tests or biopsies, and the cross-sectional design limits conclusions on the permanence of skin changes. The study underscores the need for dermatologists to recognize these reactions and for patients to be aware of the risks associated with BKT.
