TLDR Deslorelin effectively treats hair loss in neutered ferrets by reducing hormone levels.
The study investigated the use of a deslorelin implant to treat hyperoestrogenism-induced alopecia in neutered ferrets, specifically due to nodular hyperplasia of the adrenocortex (NHA). Three ferrets with alopecia and elevated estradiol (E2) levels were treated with a 4.7 mg deslorelin acetate implant. Post-treatment, the ferrets showed significant hair regrowth and a decrease in E2 levels to basal levels typical of untreated control females in anoestrus or luteal phase. The ferrets remained healthy with normal hair 19-21 months after treatment, indicating that deslorelin effectively suppressed E2 production and was a valuable treatment for hormonal alopecia in neutered ferrets.
