TLDR Dermoscopic features can help distinguish female androgenetic alopecia from telogen effluvium and healthy controls.
The study compared dermoscopic findings in 124 women, including 31 with female androgenetic alopecia (FAGA), 33 with telogen effluvium (TE), and 60 controls. Significant differences were found in hair diameter diversity (HDD) and the proportion of vellus hairs, with FAGA patients showing higher HDD and more vellus hairs than TE patients and controls. The presence of perifollicular discoloration and yellow dots also helped distinguish FAGA from TE and healthy controls. These dermoscopic features can aid in the early detection and differentiation of FAGA and TE.
