TLDR Different thicknesses of hair strands can indicate the severity of hair thinning.
The study from April 30, 2001, proposed a new clinical scoring method for evaluating the degree of androgenetic alopecia based on hair diameter diversity. The researchers found that this macroscopic scoring method was significantly correlated with the Hamilton classification and histological hair density. They also observed that diversity in hair diameter was the most accurate clinical parameter linked to follicle miniaturization, a key factor in the onset and development of androgenic alopecia. The anagen-telogen ratio also decreased in parallel with the decrease in clinical hair density score. The study concluded that hair diameter diversity is an important, easily accessible, and reliable parameter for diagnosing and managing androgenic alopecia.
