TLDR People with myotonic dystrophy type 1 tend to develop basal cell carcinoma at a younger age but not more frequently than others.
The study analyzed the incidence of cutaneous tumors in 102 Caucasian patients with myotonic dystrophy type 1 (DM1) compared to 103 matched controls. It found that the occurrence of basal cell carcinoma (BCC) was not significantly higher in DM1 patients, with 6 cases in DM1 patients versus 3 in controls. However, DM1 patients developed their first BCC at a younger average age of 51 years, compared to 66 years in the control group. Pilomatrixomas were found in 5 DM1 patients but in none of the controls, and no melanomas were detected in DM1 patients. The study concluded that DM1 might lead to an earlier development of multiple BCCs but does not necessarily increase the overall frequency of BCCs.
