TLDR Cuscuta reflexa extracts helped regrow hair in rats with drug-induced hair loss.
The study from 2014 investigated the effects of Cuscuta reflexa extracts on cyclophosphamide (CYP)-induced alopecia in male Swiss albino rats. The rats were divided into four groups, with one group receiving only distilled water, another receiving CYP to induce alopecia, and the remaining two groups receiving CYP plus either petroleum ether extract or ethanolic extract of Cuscuta reflexa at a dose of 250 mg/kg. The study, which involved 24 rats, found that the groups treated with the extracts showed hair regrowth, with the highest hair density and anagen/telogen ratio observed in the group treated with petroleum ether extract, followed by the ethanolic extract group, and the lowest in the CYP-only group. The study concluded that both extracts were effective in promoting hair regrowth and preventing hair loss induced by CYP, potentially by preventing p53 accumulation or downregulation, thus inhibiting apoptosis of hair follicles.

Alopecia areata, a type of hair loss, may be passed through T cells and has genetic links, while treatments vary in effectiveness. Male pattern baldness can be treated with finasteride and is influenced by androgens in hair follicles.
