TLDR Curcumin improved some metabolic factors in women with PCOS but did not affect cholesterol, insulin, or testosterone levels.
The randomized controlled trial conducted from 2020 to 2022 involved 54 women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), aged 18 to 45. Participants were divided into two groups, one receiving two 500 mg curcumin tablets daily for twelve weeks, and the other receiving placebo tablets. The study found that curcumin significantly lowered mean serum Fasting Blood Sugar (FBS) levels and reduced the frequency of amenorrhea and oligomenorrhea. However, curcumin did not significantly affect triglyceride, cholesterol, LDL, HDL, Fasting Blood Insulin (FBI), Sex Hormone Binding Globulin (SHBG), testosterone serum levels, duration of menstruation, and hirsutism. The study concluded that curcumin could potentially improve insulin sensitivity and metabolic factors in people with PCOS, but further research is needed.
