Croton tiglium Linn., known for its potent purgative, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory properties, is a medicinal shrub with a complex phytochemical profile, including diterpenoids, alkaloids, and phenolic compounds. Despite its toxicity, particularly from phorbol ester-rich seeds, it shows potential in various therapeutic applications such as anticancer, antiviral, and neuroprotective effects. Recent studies suggest its potential in promoting hair growth through PKC-mediated signaling, improved microcirculation, and antioxidative mechanisms. However, its toxicity necessitates rigorous detoxification and standardized formulation for safe clinical use. This review examines the dual therapeutic-toxic nature of C. tiglium and its prospects in hair-growth formulations.
November 2025 in “Zenodo (CERN European Organization for Nuclear Research)” Croton tiglium Linn., known for its medicinal properties in traditional medicine, contains bioactive compounds like tigliane diterpenoids that offer therapeutic benefits such as anticancer, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory effects. Recent studies suggest its potential in promoting hair growth through mechanisms involving PKC-mediated signaling and antioxidative actions. However, its toxicity, particularly from phorbol ester-rich seeds, presents challenges for safe use, requiring detoxification and standardized formulations. This review examines the plant's dual therapeutic-toxic nature and its prospects as a candidate for hair-growth treatments.
