TLDR Croton tiglium Linn. may promote hair growth but needs careful use due to toxicity.
Croton tiglium Linn., known for its medicinal properties in traditional medicine, is gaining attention for its potential in hair growth and other therapeutic applications. Despite its toxicity, particularly from phorbol ester-rich seeds, the plant's diverse bioactive compounds, including diterpenoids, alkaloids, and phenolic compounds, offer a range of pharmacological activities such as anticancer, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory effects. Recent studies suggest that C. tiglium may promote hair growth through mechanisms involving protein kinase C-mediated signaling, improved microcirculation, and antioxidative effects that stimulate hair follicle regeneration. However, its toxicity necessitates careful detoxification and formulation for safe use in clinical settings. This review evaluates the dual therapeutic and toxic nature of C. tiglium, highlighting its potential as a candidate for hair-growth formulations.
