TLDR The gels improved wound healing in diabetic mice but need human trials.
The study explored the use of collagen/chitosan gels cross-linked with genipin for wound healing in diabetic CD1 mice. These gels, enhanced with silver nanoparticles, demonstrated improved mechanical properties and biological activity, promoting the expression of genes like VEGF, TGF-b1, IL-1b, and TIMP1, which are crucial for wound healing. The application of the gels resulted in faster wound closure, increased collagen deposition, and improved repair of hair follicles and sebaceous glands. Despite these promising results, the study emphasized the need for clinical trials, as the animal model may not fully replicate human diabetic conditions.
