TLDR Testosterone and finasteride showed minor cognitive benefits in older men.
The study investigated the cognitive effects of administering testosterone and finasteride to 60 older hypogonadal men over 1 year. Participants were aged 60 years or older with low serum testosterone levels. They received testosterone-enanthate and finasteride in a 2x2 factorial design. Results showed that testosterone led to a small decrease in depressive symptoms and a moderate improvement in visuospatial memory. Finasteride slightly improved performance on a specific cognitive test. However, no major cognitive improvements were observed with either treatment. The study suggested that further research is needed to explore the potential cognitive benefits of testosterone replacement in other areas.
