TLDR CLK1 is needed for skin cells to become epidermal cells but not sebocytes.
The study investigated the role of CDC-like kinase 1 (CLK1) in the differentiation of a telogen skin stem cell line. By using shRNA to create CLK1 knockdown strains, researchers found that cells lacking CLK1 could differentiate into sebocytes but not into epidermal cells. This indicated that CLK1 was essential for epidermal differentiation but not necessary for sebocyte differentiation.
