TLDR Finasteride may cause lasting sexual and mental health issues, and genetic screening could help prevent them.
This case report examines three young men (aged 22-23) who developed post-finasteride syndrome (PFS) after using finasteride for androgenetic alopecia, experiencing persistent sexual and mental health side effects such as erectile dysfunction, anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Physical examinations revealed reduced testicle size in two cases, and laboratory tests showed hormonal imbalances. Genetic analysis identified five potential risk genes (CA8, VSIG10L2, HLA-B, KRT38, and HLA-DRB1) associated with PFS. The study underscores the need for further research on the long-term side effects of finasteride and suggests genetic screening as a future preventive measure, though the small sample size and lack of a control group limit the conclusions.
