TLDR Sansevieria and Dracaena are evolutionarily linked, and a specific gene marker can distinguish closely related species.
This study analyzed the chloroplast genomes of 10 cultivars of Sansevieria trifasciata, revealing a typical quadripartite circular structure and 113 conserved functional genes. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed an evolutionary link between Sansevieria and Dracaena. The research identified species-specific patterns in gene distributions at IR junctions, indicating adaptive divergence, and discovered the trnT-psbD deletion marker, which can distinguish closely related species. These findings provide essential molecular tools for germplasm identification, phylogenetic reconstruction, and taxonomic revisions in the Asparagaceae family.
