TLDR Targeting MIG and MCP-1 may help treat inflammation in alopecia areata.
The study on alopecia areata (AA) involved 13 patients and examined the expression of chemokines to understand their role in recruiting mononuclear leukocytes. It found that the chemokine MIG was strongly expressed, correlating with a lymphocyte-dominated infiltrate around hair follicles, while MCP-1 showed moderate expression. Other chemokines like IP-10 had low or negligible expression. The findings suggested that MIG and MCP-1 were significant in the inflammatory process of AA, and targeting these chemokines could be a potential strategy for local anti-inflammatory therapy. The study also highlighted the Th1-related interferon-γ-inducible expression of MIG, indicating a persistent Th1 response in AA.
