TLDR Low-dose oral minoxidil is safe for the heart in the short term for hair loss patients.
This retrospective cohort study evaluated the cardiovascular safety of low-dose oral minoxidil (LDOM) in 9,724 patients with non-scarring alopecia, compared to 9,724 matched controls. The study found no significant differences in the risks of pericardial effusion, cardiac tamponade, or angina between the LDOM-treated group and controls over 1 year. Specifically, there were 15 vs. 14 pericardial effusions, 0 vs. <10 cardiac tamponades, and 15 vs. 18 cases of angina in the LDOM group compared to controls. These results suggest that LDOM treatment does not increase the risk of cardiovascular adverse events in patients with non-scarring alopecia, although further research is needed to assess long-term safety.
