TLDR Dermatologists should guide patients on blood donation timing due to various eligibility criteria.
This review examined Brazilian blood donation eligibility criteria for dermatologic patients, focusing on regulations from Ministerial Directive #1353/2011 and the Hemotherapy Center of Ribeirão Preto. Permanent ineligibility was associated with conditions like autoimmune diseases affecting multiple organs, certain cancers, severe atopic dermatitis or psoriasis, and previous use of etretinate. Temporary ineligibility was linked to the use of systemic retinoids, corticosteroids, 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, and other medications, as well as conditions like recent tattoos, piercings, and infections. The review highlighted the need for dermatologists to guide patients on blood donation timing and the implications of drug withdrawal, noting that thalidomide was missing from the teratogenic drugs list and that the restriction period for finasteride might be unnecessarily long.
