TLDR Beta-catenin boosts hair follicle cell growth by increasing c-myc expression.
The study investigated the role of beta-catenin in regulating the proliferation and differentiation of hair follicle cells by transfecting an amino-terminal truncated beta-catenin gene into these cells. Successful transfection was confirmed by increased nuclear expression of beta-catenin. The transfected cells showed a significant increase in clone forming efficiency, although there was no significant increase in large clone formation. There was a slight increase in keratin 19 expression, while both c-Myc protein and mRNA expression increased significantly. The study concluded that beta-catenin promoted hair follicle cell proliferation by enhancing the expression of the c-myc gene.
