TLDR Topical tretinoin may increase beard hair density.
In 2016, a case study reported a 30-year-old male experiencing an increase in beard hair density following the application of 0.05% tretinoin cream, used daily for acne scar treatment, along with two sessions of 70% glycolic acid peeling. The patient noticed the increase in beard density three months after starting the tretinoin treatment, without any signs of hypertrichosis elsewhere on the body. His serum androgen profile and cortisol levels were normal. Tretinoin is known for its skin benefits, including promoting epidermal proliferation and differentiation, which are important for hair growth. Previous studies have shown tretinoin's potential in promoting hair regrowth in androgenetic alopecia and increasing the anagen phase in mice. However, excessive vitamin A intake has been linked to the onset of alopecia areata and worsening scarring alopecia. This case is the first to suggest an improvement in beard density with topical retinoids, indicating a need for further research, such as split-face studies, to confirm these findings. The authors hypothesize that individual conditions or drug interactions, like chemical peeling, may enhance tretinoin's effect on hair density. A split-face trial is being designed to investigate this further.
