TLDR Basal cell epithelioma likely starts from the hair follicle's outer root sheath.
The study investigated the presence and distribution of cytokeratins (CKs) in 20 solid basal cell epitheliomas (BCEs) and compared them with normal epidermis and the outer root sheath (ORS) of hair follicles. The findings showed that BCE and ORS shared similar CK profiles, particularly CKs 5, 6, 14, 16, and 17, which were distinct from the CK pattern of normal epidermis. This similarity suggested that the lower ORS might serve as a cellular pool for the generation of BCE. The study highlighted the potential origin of BCE from the ORS of hair follicles, supported by immunohistochemical and biochemical analyses.
