TLDR Artemis protein may help control hair growth and health by influencing cell processes.
The study investigated the role of Artemis, a protein involved in DNA repair, in the growth and development of human hair follicles (HFs). Specifically, the researchers focused on the phosphorylation of Artemis at serine 516 (Artemis S516-P) and its association with markers of proliferation, apoptosis, and differentiation in normal adult anagen scalp HFs. Using immunofluorescence double-staining, they found that Artemis S516-P had overlapping expression patterns with keratin 16 and similar patterns with c-myc and p21, but opposite trends with keratin 10, phospho-p53, Bax, Bcl-2, and keratin 14. These findings suggest that Artemis may be involved in regulating differentiation, proliferation, apoptosis, and cell cycling during hair follicle growth and development.
