TLDR A certain gene variant may increase the risk of polycystic ovary syndrome in Chinese women.
The study, conducted on 224 Chinese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and 223 control subjects, found that the rs6152A allele of the androgen receptor (AR) gene was significantly more prevalent in the PCOS group, suggesting an association with an increased risk of PCOS. Specifically, carriers of the rs6152A allele had a 1.608-fold higher risk of developing PCOS than those with the rs6152GG genotype. While no link was found between the AR rs6152G/A polymorphism and other demographic or clinical characteristics, except for body mass index (BMI) in PCOS patients, the study did note differences in sex hormone serum concentrations between the two groups. The researchers concluded that the rs6152G/A polymorphism might contribute to the development of PCOS, but emphasized the need for further studies with larger sample sizes to confirm these results.
