TLDR Longer CAG repeat lengths in the androgen receptor gene are linked to higher testosterone levels in women with PCOS.
The study, which included 114 women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and 205 controls, explored the connection between the length of CAG repeats in the androgen receptor (AR) gene and serum androgen levels in women with PCOS. It found no significant difference in CAG repeat length between the PCOS group and the control group. However, among the PCOS patients, those with higher free testosterone levels had significantly longer CAG repeat lengths. There was also a significant correlation between the average CAG repeat length and free testosterone concentration in the PCOS group. The findings suggest that while AR gene CAG repeat polymorphism does not directly cause PCOS, it may influence serum free testosterone concentrations in women with the condition, with longer repeats being associated with higher androgen levels.
