TLDR Antiandrogens block male hormones and are not safe during pregnancy.
Antiandrogens are drugs that block androgens by either inhibiting their binding to androgen receptors or preventing the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). These include steroidal antiandrogens like spironolactone and cyproterone acetate, which also inhibit androgen synthesis, and non-steroidal antiandrogens such as flutamide, bicalutamide, enzalutamide, darolutamide, and apalutamide. Flutamide is particularly potent. Finasteride and dutasteride, which inhibit 5α-reductase, have different half-lives, with finasteride being shorter. Antiandrogens are not recommended during pregnancy due to the risk of feminizing a male fetus, and there is a precautionary recommendation for condom use due to the presence of these drugs in semen.
